With the ever-increasing fear of volatile occurrences involving chemicals, Castagna Consulting Group has been challenged by our clients in the chemical industry to design and construct functional, yet safe facilities.
Building codes and National Fire Protection Codes continue to evolve in the design and construction of industrial facilities using, manufacturing and/or warehousing chemicals. Segregation of flammable liquids and solids, corrosive and oxidizer classified chemicals is a starting point of design. Workflow and employee safety are also major design elements. Containment of each hazard group sepparate from the other areas is a matter of layout and materials used in the facility. Three and four hour walls and diked rooms to isolate an area are essential design elements in all areas of a facility to minimize hazardous incedents. Early detection and suppression systems are introduced for early warning of an incedent giving the building systems time to nuetralize a potential hazard.
Another challenge is to give the fire department and local Haz-Mat teams decision-making time in the event of a fire. Chemical resitant materials are used on floors, walls and structural elements in order to contain any contaminated materials within a confined space which enables decision making time for the fire officials while they evaluate the problem. Ventilation, electrical and suppression systems controls are designed so the fire fighters can control ventilation and suppression manually from a remote and secure location.
